MicroTECH's IP and Security Tools
(Best viewed in 800x600 or larger)
These are some of the tools our techs use both at the shop and on-site. Click on a link
and the link will open in a new browser window. The speed test, line
test, and tweak test are not recommended for 56k dial-ups.
The Internet
Traffic Report has been decommissioned as of March 31, 2001,
but they may be bringing it back! Check the link for
further updates.
A note from J.R.: This page is always under
development, so expect changes every now and then. Latest additions/modifications are highlighted in red.
Someday, I'll get around to reworking this page. I'm trying to keep it simple,
so it's not bloated with a lot of graphics. I'll be moving all the security scanners to the
Security Tools link in the future.

ChoiceOne
DSL Locator - Not really an IP tool, but it can tell you if DSL is a
possibility for your location in Central NY (It doesn't look like it works
outside of New York State, though. Sorry). Dead link!
Daryl's Subnet Calculator - A simple subnet calculator that runs in your browser.
Daryl's TCP/IP Primer
- You want to learn everything about TCP/IP? This is one of the best primers out
there.
DSLReports - THE
place to go to get all the info you need on broadband. All types are covered,
including cable and wireless.
Internetworking
Tech. Overview by Cisco - Explains about the technology behind your connection.
Line Test by DSL Reports - Line Quality Test.
(Note: You must be a member of DSLReports in order to use this. Membership is
free, however :).
Samspade.org - Common IP tools like WhoIs, Tracert, DNS Query, etc. that
runs in you browser. Browser plug-in also available.
Secure-Me by DSL Reports - One of the best security scanners out there.
Find out if your network is secure.
Shields Up from the creator of SpinRite - Simple port security scanner.
In my opinion, stay away from the LeakTest product. It's
not as big of an issue as Steve lets on. All the program does is open an FTP
connection (Port21) to his FTP server to see if it connects. Your Internet
programs work exactly same way! That's how they're suppose to work!
It's a client-side application (Windows program, in other words) that works just
like your Internet applications when you run them on your PC. By running the
program, you are simply allowing it to connect to the 'net. No big deal. If the
program isn't running, their is no connection. Period. I'll explain this in
greater detail when I move these security tools to the new page.
Shield Probe by DSL
Reports -
Java-based port security scanner.
Speed Test by DSL Reports - Test your connections "true" throughput.
Sygate Online Services Security Scan
- From the makers of Sygate products. Offers a simple port scanner, plus more
comprehensive scans as well.
Symantec
Security and Anti-Virus Online Scanner - Another basic
scanner, but does include a browser check to see if your browser will tell a
site where you've been. And, you can scan your
system without having to install Norton Anti-virus. Great for simple scans. This, however,
is NOT a replacement for a real scanner!! We only
recommend and use Norton Anti-Virus, both for home PCs and corporations.
Tweak Test by DSL Reports - Checks to see if your IP
connection needs tweaking.
Visual Trace Route - Trace a connection from a high-speed line
in Dulles, Virginia to any IP or DNS address. (Note: The
other connections are now dead, but will be updated when they're available.
What's my
public IP address? by DSLReports - Find out
what your public IP address is.
Security Tools
(Under Construction) - Various security tools
to help plug up those leaky holes in your broadband connection (Page is being
worked on).
Our Wireless Connection (Under Construction)
- A description of the WLL that we have at MicroTECH.
Pictures have been added!
Internet Gateways - Here's a very small list of
hardware gateways available. There are so many now, I
can't keep up. In alphabetical order:
D-Link DI-701, DI-704,
DI-707,
DI-711, and DI-713
DI-7xy:
x = 0 CAT5 only x = 1 Wireless and CAT5
y = Number of CAT5 ports
DI-701 with v3.20 firmware Security
Scan Results. Perfect Security score of
0. Only the IP address could be pinged and all ports were stealthed! Nothing
had to be changed to get this result, BTW. This is the best result from the
DI-701 yet.
NetGear Internet Gateway
Routers - Chart of all models (None have been tested here).
Linksys BEFSR11
and BEFSR41
Security scan results: Old
Firmware (v1.0?) and v1.36.
More scans coming soon!!
NOTE: If you haven't updated your
firmware for the Linksys products, do so ASAP. The v1.36 and v1.37 firmware with the default settings resulted in a perfect score of 0,
plus it wasn't pingable. The unit I tested was fresh out of the box, BTW.
I
originally didn't recommend the
Linksys products due to the bad security scan results I got from DSL Reports, and the problems people have been reporting. Three
ports were reported open, and NOTHING should have been open at all!
One of
them was the TFTP port. This could have lead to someone updating the firmware
(or even corrupting it) from the Internet! Yikes!! They have revised the firmware since
the original test, so the new scan resulted, out of the box, in 100% better security. However, the routers can be configured to allow these
ports to be accessible from the Internet. So be careful with your
settings. More scan results from these settings will be coming soon.
And my personal favorite and secure, but more expensive SonicWall
Products.
