Yikes! Haven't done much updating for a while.
What can I say, I'm a busy guy.

Vista Info: - Tidbits on things about Vista
On
a personal note: I can't stand Vista, and do not recommend it at all!
There are WAY too many issues to even start listing here. I
consider Vista to be a bigger public beta than XP ever was. And the irony is
that you pay to use a beta product! Windows 7 will be the real
Gold release of Vista, I hope. For some proof of this, take a look at this

WSUS - Updated with WSUS 3.0 SP2 info, including fixes to SBS2008/2003 when SP2 is installed.
If you're install WSUS on Server 2008 R2, you can install it through the Add Roles Wizard. Then you will only need the SP2 file below. :)
The following software is required for running WSUS on
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1:
Microsoft
.NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package
For 64-bit platforms, go to
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 Service pack 1 - Needed for WSUS v3
SP2. For 32 and 64 bit versions.
Microsoft
Management Console 3.0 for Windows Server 2003 (KB907265)
For 64-bit platforms, go to
Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition
Microsoft
Report Viewer Redistributable 2005 - For both 32 and 64 bit versions. Use the SP1 version below.
Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2005 SP1 - For 32 and 64 bit versions.
Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008 SP1
- Needed for WSUS v3
SP2. For 32 and 64 bit versions.
WSUS 3.0 SP1
WSUS 3.0 SP2 - New version released on 2009-08-25
WSUS 3.0
if you really need it (Hint: If you have v2 installed, look for an 81 Meg file in the
Dist folder with a date modification around 5/11/2007)
Software updates are not managed by SBS 2003 Update Services after you upgrade to WSUS 3.0 Service Pack 1 or 2 - When it "breaks", it's a PITA to fix. This article has fixed two of my clients so far. Thing to note: If you've integrated the WSUS database into SQL Server, then the command line syntax is osql -E -i C:\FixR2.SQL
These three posts will assist in getting WSUS 3 working
again if SP2 doesn't update correctly. Personally I'm very touchy about
doing SP2, but it is required if you have any Win7 PCs on your SBS domain.

Internet Gateways - Here's a very small list of hardware gateways available. There are just too many to list, so I will only list ones I have worked with.
D-Link DI-701, DI-704,
DI-707, DI-711, and DI-713
DI-7xy:
x = 0 CAT5 only x = 1 Wireless and CAT5
y = Number of CAT5 ports
DI-701 with v3.20 firmware
Security
Scan Results. Perfect Security score of
0. Only the IP address could be pinged and all ports were stealthed! Nothing
had to be changed to get this result, BTW. This is the best result from the
DI-701 yet.
NetGear Wired Internet Gateway Routers and NetGear Wireless Internet Gateway Routers
NOTICE! Even though Cisco has bought them out, I still no longer recommend Linksys routers as I have run into way too many issues with them over the years. A perfect example is my own two BEFSR11 routers. Both have proven to fail under pressure, locking up when I push a lot of bandwidth through them. And several clients I've worked with have run into the same issues. Other routers I've tested have had no problems with the same amount of BW, so I will just chalk it up as bad over-all design. I've also run into an issue that STILL hasn't been fixed. If you update the firmware past v1.44.2 (Dec. 13, 2002), the VNC protocol will no longer work, both inbound and outbound. This bug has been reported since v1.45.6 (June 24,2003) was released (when the VNC protocol first broke), and it still doesn't work (last that I knew of). So I will be happy sitting behind my Cisco PIX 501 until it's eventual EOL.
Linksys BEFSR11
and BEFSR41
Security scan results: Old
Firmware (v1.21) v1.36 (all versions past v1.36 have reported "perfect" results)
NOTE: If you haven't updated your firmware for the Linksys products, do so ASAP. The v1.36 and higher firmware with the default settings resulted in a perfect score of 0, plus it wasn't pingable. The unit I tested showing the scan results above was fresh out of the box.
As mentioned above, I still don't recommend the Linksys products due to the bad security scan results I got from DSL Reports, and the problems people have been reporting. Three ports were reported open, and NOTHING should have been open at all! One of them was the TFTP port. This could have lead to someone updating the firmware (or even corrupting it) from the Internet! Yikes!! They have revised the firmware since the original test, so the new scan resulted, out of the box, in 100% better security. However, the routers can be configured to allow these ports to be accessible from the Internet. So be careful with your settings.
And still my personal favorites and secure, but more expensive SonicWall Products, CISCO PIX 500 Series, and Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances (Slowly replacing the PIX Series).
